2009 Felton Annual Report

ar09_01

“Each day in 2009, I asked every person with whom I had a meaningful encounter to submit a record of this meeting through an online survey. These reports form the heart of the 2009 Annual Report. From parents to old friends, to people I met for the first time, to my dentist… any time I felt that someone had discerned enough of my personality and activities, they were given a card with a URL and unique number to record their experience. ”

This sounds like a really fun project and a not so serious look at infographics. Check out the full story here.

BBC’s Digital Facelift

bbc_0

BBC recently got a digital media update with help of Neville Brody and his agency, Research Studios. BBC has been growing and due to the organic way which the website evolved, there were dozens of small teams each woking independent of each other. There was not much of a unified brand presence.

This article from BBC talks about the change and their new global style.

Die Neue Typographie

The MoMA has a new exhibition up called “The New Typography”. Its a look back at the New Typography movement in the 1920’s-1930’s. I found this nice article from Brigitta Bungard who is the Design Manager in the MoMA’s Design Department.

In it, she gives brief behind the scenes look (from her perspective) to what goes on at the museum. I wish I could go and check out some of these great pieces of history.

Scanning directly in Photoshop CS4

scan

I’ve used Photoshop throughout the years and have never had this problem till now. The way it used to happen was I’d open up Photoshop, go to File>Import>Scanner in the menu and it would open up my scanning options. After I upgraded, it dosen’t recognize my scanner anymore! (Canon LIDE 600F)

After digging around the web for a while I found the problem and solution which I’ll run though here.

The Problem
Photoshop doesn’t scan. Photoshop itself has no scanning interface, and knows nothing about how to talk to a scanner.
Photoshop indirectly calls the scanner drivers installed by your scanner manufacturer through a standard interface known as TWAIN.

Unfortunately, the drivers have increasingly been crashing due to bugs in the drivers — causing a lot of headaches for Photoshop users and developers.
So, rather than suffer crashes, we moved the TWAIN plugin to an optional install.

The scanning program that comes with your scanner is the same software that Photoshop was calling through the driver.

The Solution

- Add TWAIN.plugin file in the
APPLICATIONS / ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS4 / PLUG-INS / IMPORT-EXPORT folder.
relaunch photoshop.

I’ve not had any problems with my scanner driver as of yet. Hopefully this helps someone Cheers!

They’re good starting points to creating some unique icons, buttons, and other design elements. Found this post on Papergear that highlights some sites that have free graphics at your disposal.
